BPR at Malan Breton SS'10 - Continued

Oh yes, back to the women’s collection. The color palette was understated for Spring (pale lavender, lily, nude, and black) and the clothing exceedingly modest but flattering. The cuts were forgiving, and could be worn by women of myriad heights and weights, with silks, tulles, and organzas very suitable for the 30+ year old woman. Think Bergdorf, not Bloomingdales.

As with other seasons, Malan added one cunning touch to many of the tops – a tight sleeve topped by a looser short arm capelet. This sleeve made the traditional designs contemporary, not trendy. The final look was also a knockout -- a simple white dress, fitted at the top with a 3 tiered airy skirt and a wide lace belt.

Other delights at the show: the first model out was a cute little girl who rocked her dress. And, the Chelsea Symphony was a clever touch, reminding the audience of the class and timelessness of the clothes. Another delight – Deshaun from Vogue Evolution (America’s Best Dance Crew Season 4) was in the house, looking more like a model than a hip hop dancer – Malan, you need to hire him for your next show!

As with many Fashion Week shows, much of the audience was decidedly NOT understated. Instead, they seemed to be competing for ‘most outrageous outfit’. But, they lost -- that prize went to the guy pitching Orbit Gum wearing a suit that seemed to be made out of a clear shower curtain with a goldfish motif. It would never be mistaken for a Malan original, but good clean fun.
