I think it's time now again to describe what I believe makes a great runway model. Lifetime and the team at Bunim/Murray did an impeccable job of casting. These models are, for the most part, pretty fantastic walkers. Ever since the inception of "Models of the Runway" (besides the first season and the wonderful models peppered in in the other seasons) the cast of models has improved.
The most wonderful runway models have incredible posture, lots of self-confidence, attitude and are easy to work with. They must also be in great shape, have a beautiful complexion and gorgeous features and have a well proportioned frame. (i.e. the proper measurements to make the designer's creations stand out). She must also understand the garment she is wearing and know how to "work" it. This means she will change her pace, where she puts her hands, the expression on her face and the pose she chooses to strike at the end of the runway. It is amazing when great models are with great designers, but sometimes you've got to wear something that may not be made well and make it look exciting and expensive. Shoulders back and yet relaxed, head up, back straight and go!
There is also something to be said about the way a model can work with her designer and hair stylist and makeup artist. Most of the time you will not say much and let them do whatever is their vision to your hair and makeup. However, if the moment is right and you feel it is appropriate, you can step in and make a suggestion in the nicest of ways. If I do this, it is only in rare circumstances when something may be hurting my eyes or affecting my vision. As a model, you do not want to have unnecessary distractions while showing your designer's look. And even if you do not like the makeup and/or hair, you just wear it and smile. In some cases, I did not understand a new makeup color or hairstyle because it was setting a new trend that people hadn't seen before. Designers want to be innovative and successfully pull off creating the next thing people want to incorporate into their daily life. Just because I don't know it yet or fully understand what their vision may be, I must wear it with confidence because it could be the very next big thing.
Now that Nina, Michael AND Heidi are critiquing the models each week on "Models of the Runway" I hope my takes will still hold their own merit. I deeply respect them and their opinions. I would love to have heard more constructive criticism from them while working on the show, myself. One of my favorite moments came from the episode where I was the modern day Marilyn Monroe. Heidi said that I WAS Marilyn and that I had been posing in the way that showed her style the whole judging session. It made me feel incredible to hear such praise from one of the original Supermodels!
I adore writing for Blogging Project Runway and I really appreciate all that this blog has done for me. I adore all of the readers and contributors!
Thank you and see you next time!
